CHOC Children’s at Mission Hospital Opens Epilepsy Electronic Monitoring Unit

The CHOC Children’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is proud to announce the addition of a new, four-bed inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) at CHOC Children’s at Mission Hospital, to augment the six-bed inpatient EMU at CHOC Children’s Orange. Dedicated to long-term video EEG recording—our team of specialists can monitor patients around the clock, pinpointing exactly where and why the child is having seizures.

Named an NAEC Level 4 epilepsy center, our Comprehensive Epilepsy Program provides the most complex forms of intensive neuro-diagnostics, and extensive medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial treatments for epilepsy and recurrent unprovoked seizures.

The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program offers:
• An unrivaled team of pediatric epilepsy experts, led by renowned epileptologist Mary Zupanc, M.D.—including board-certified epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, social workers, physical therapists, dieticians, nurses and nurse practitioners, child life specialists and case managers
• State-of-the-art diagnostics, which may include electroencephalogram (EEG), Computed Tomography Scan (CT scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and long-term EEG monitoring
• Complete evaluation for epilepsy surgery, including intracranial electrodes and other more complex surgical procedures
